Hospice Benefits Revocation

At National Hospice and Palliative Care, we understand that choosing hospice care is a significant decision. While hospice provides compassionate, comfort-focused care, patients always have the right to revoke their hospice benefits at any time.

What Does Hospice Revocation Mean?

Revoking hospice benefits means that a patient chooses to stop hospice care and return to curative or life-prolonging treatments. This decision may be made for several reasons, including:

Seeking curative treatments again (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries).
A change in health status where a patient stabilizes or improves.
Personal or family choice to explore other healthcare options.

How to Revoke Hospice Benefits

Revocation of hospice benefits must be done voluntarily by the patient (or their legal representative) through a signed revocation statement. Once revoked:

Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance coverage reverts to standard healthcare benefits.

The patient can resume hospital visits, treatments, and doctor’s office care as covered under their plan.

Hospice services, including medications, equipment, and nursing care, will no longer be provided.

Things to Consider Before Revoking

Continuity of Care:

  • Ensure you have a new care plan in place for the transition to alternative services or treatments.
  • Discuss options with our team to minimize disruptions.

Insurance Implications:

  • Revoking hospice benefits may affect coverage for certain services, so it’s important to confirm what will and won’t be covered under your insurance plan.

Re-Election of Hospice Services:

If circumstances change, patients are eligible to re-elect hospice care at any time if they meet eligibility requirements.

Can I Re-Enroll in Hospice Later?

Yes! If hospice care is needed again, patients can resume hospice services at any time. A new hospice election form will need to be signed, and care will restart without penalties or restrictions.

Making an Informed Decision
